Professor Nicola West

BDS FDS RCS (Eng) PhD FDS (Rest Dent) FHEA

Professor Nicola West is a graduate of the University of Wales College of Medicine (Cardiff) and is registered to the General Dental Council (GDC No. D 61484  www.gdc-uk.org). After attaining her fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Nicola gained her PhD from the University of Wales (Cardiff) in 1995, on dentine hypersensitivity and tooth surface loss. 

 

Nicola gained her chair in Periodontology at Bristol Dental School, where she conducts research, leading the Clinical Trials Unit and attracting substantial industrial funding. Her current research interests include: developing research methodologies, periodontal conditions, bone augmentation and peri-implant lesions, the scientific evaluation of oral health care products, tooth wear, dentine hypersensitivity and tooth whitening. She is also an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. 

 

Since 1990, Nicola has maintained in parallel, a thriving private referral practice in the heart of Bristol. At The Bristol Perio Clinic, Nicola undertakes specialist periodontal treatment, bone augmentation and implant placement. A particular sphere of interest includes the management of peri-implantitis lesions. Nicola lectures widely on this topic and is a co-author of the Association of Dental Implantology guidelines for management of peri-implantitis 2013 (www.adi.org.uk). Nicola has established a reputation for aesthetic treatment of complex restorative cases involving periodontal, implant and prosthodontic treatment.

Nicola lectures regularly in the national and international forum, is on the editorial board of the Journal of Dentistry and is a regular reviewer for 6 high impact dental journals. She is an active member and secretary of the British Society of Periodontology (www.bsperio.org.uk)  and currently is the regional postgraduate tutor for the British Society of Periodontology in the South West of England. Nicola utilises her valuable teaching experience as mentor both within and external to the university, managing complex restorative, periodontal and implant  cases for dentists.  She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (www.heacademy.ac.uk). Nicola leads the periodontology, bone augmentation and peri-impantitis Unit in the Bristol Dental School Masters Programme. She is also a member of the Association of Dental Implantology (www.adi.org.uk) where she sits on the advisory committee for the management of peri-implant diseases. Nicola is a member of the International Team of Implantology (www.iti.org). She is also a UK member of the International Standards Committee (www.iso.org).

Dr Joon Seong

BDS MFDS RCPS (Glasg) PhD FDS RCPS (Glasg)

Dr Joon Seong is a graduate of the University of Bristol and is registered to the General Dental Council (GDC No. 158303). After attaining his membership from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Joon gained his PhD from the University of Bristol. He is GDC registered Specialist in Periodontics and is currently a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

 

Joon is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Bristol and Cardiff University. His research interests include developing research methodologies, periodontal conditions, bone augmentation and peri-implant lesions, the scientific evaluation of oral health care products, toothwear, dentine hypersensitivity and tooth whitening. He has conducted over 50 clinical research studies with many publications in peer-reviewed journals. Joon is heavily involved with both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching & training of Periodontology and lectures in both international and national fora.

 

Recognised for his expertise in aesthetic treatment of complex restorative cases, Joon has a particular interest in the management of missing teeth and failing dental implants. He is passionate about incorporating cutting-edge technologies into his clinical practice, always striving for exceptional outcomes with meticulous attention to detail.

Joon has played a significant role in the British Society of Periodontology (BSP), serving as a Council Member (2011–2014) and now as an elected Faculty Member. He is also a member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), serving as a regional ITI study club director for Cardiff, Wales. Additionally, he is an active member of the British Dental Association (BDA), and International Association for Dental Research (IADR).

Joon is also the Lead Examiner for the MPerio Specialty Examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, playing a key role in assessing and shaping the next generation of periodontal specialists.
